Born in St. Croix and growing up in Miami, Florida, Kobie Xavier is no stranger to a warm environment. That’s probably why he loves to train at the inviting atmosphere of Steelworks . “Even when I was a competitive swimmer I don’t think I had the level of support and encouragement from my fellow athletes like I get at Steelworks.”
During the day, you’ll find Kobie working as a supervisor of database support for the transplant program at Einstein Hospital. In between working and working out, Kobie also enjoys tennis and long bike rides. He doesn’t, on the other hand, care to play with frogs or turtles because he is “totally grossed out by amphibians. Frogs, toads, newts, and salamanders totally make my skin crawl and they may or may not have played a roll in my leaving warm and moist Miami for this frozen wasteland.”
Kobie has been at Steelworks for about five months. During that time, he has “learned more about what I am capable of physically and mentally… I know more about myself now than I did before. I use to think my body was sometime working against me, but now my body and mind are one.”

Not only has he bridged the mind body gap, but Kobie has also noticed some other great changes. “Since I joined Steelworks I have noticed a number of changes: more energy, clothing fits better, etc…. My mom thinks I’ve grown taller, my boss says I seem way more relaxed, and my friends say I’m more outgoing. I chalk it up to my confidence in myself…”

Kobie is a big fan of deadlifts, but absolutely despises double unders. “Unlike most of the other moves I dread seeing on the board, my issue with double unders isn’t something that can be solved with more strength…Double unders are all technique and rhythm and should be the one exercise that I should be good at [given his background as a dancer.] That said, I have not given up on them. I will eventually figure them out.”

For anyone who is hesitant about training at Steelworks , Kobie has this message. “The only preparation you need for Steelworks is sneakers and a willingness to try. All those other things will come. ‘I’m not strong enough yet, I need to build up my endurance, I’m not comfortable with weights and bars.’ If you had all those things already, why would you join a gym? The whole purpose of training is to improve. We all start somewhere and the stick to measure by is not where you started but how much you grow.”
